For the Sweet Addict
Post the previous piece had got a few queries ; as to what to substitute for sugar....for the sweet taste.
First; is it essential ?
It is one of the six primary flavours [ other five being salt, bitter, pungent(hot!) , astringent &; sour ]
Though Ayurveda says rice, wheat and cereals do contribute to the sweet taste, I think satiation can come only from the regular sweet as we know it. Pls note, pranic foods in general do come in that taste :) , fruits i mean ...pls refer...http://freeprana.blogspot.com/2009/06/food-prana.html
Meanwhile until you are able to achieve "real" Pranic living( fruits, nuts only ) we can use jaggery syrup or date syrup ( not aspartame, sucralose both are toxic , the second one is not even recognised as food and not metabolised, diabetics are happy about it though ,as it does not contribute to a spike in glucose levels. Aspartame is proven to cause cancer in Rats - so as long as you are not a rat maybe u are safe ! )
Honey..?...: Never.
It is primarily sugar syrup and the remaining % I doubt is honey at all .
Simple reason - there are not enough honey combs being tapped to fill the billions of honey jars in the market today. One should squeeze a medium sized honey-comb to see the minimal quantity of honey that can come from a medium sized comb.
Proof - Symptoms that I get to see with honey consumption( From stores ) are identical to Sugar consumption. This is not seen with real honey from honey-combs.
Also , honeybees are fed sugar syrup to keep them alive when it is off-season for flowers . This too ends up in the combs.
Here is a drink and a pudding that i use to satisfy my sweet tooth. (Recipe not patented yet )
Hot chocolate:
Ingredients:
1. Cocoa Powder ( unsweetened...My brand Cadbury's )
2. Brown Jaggery syrup
3. Hot milk
Process : Add Two Tbs. of Jaggery syrup to 30 ml water and stir well. Add Two Tbs Cocoa Powder to this liquid ( temp. cool .. else i find the Cocoa gets into clumps ).
Stir &; squeeze the solids well with a spoon , so that there are no clumps - result will be a paste of cocoa. Now add 100 ml of Hot milk and top of with water to thin the concoction. Stir well.
Result : Super tasting Hot chocolate &; sugar free
Pudding:
1. 10 Big Slices Brown bread
2. 200 ml milk
3. 3 tsp. Ghee ( butter is not pranic, but recipe tastes better with Butter )
4. 2 tsp Cream if available
5. One small egg ( recommend two but wife says that my pudding has a strong taste of egg with 2 )
6. Vanilla essence ( 5 drops )
7. Jaggery syrup - If syrup is thick use 50 ml for mild sweetening( 100 ml for the sweet addict. )
Process: : Pulverize the bread into small pieces & put into a bowl. Add milk, ghee, cream, egg/s, essence into the bowl and mix well. Result should be a tight mixture( means not too watery ) . If watery add more bread. Optional: Top with nuts, raisins .
Place the bowl in a pressure cooker and cook for 5 mins after one whistle.
Cake variation: Turn into a cake by placing the mixture in an oven ( note : for a cake use a more drier mixture )
